Did people really live 900 years?

Open(red)Evidence from:Scripture, Science

Short answer

Unknown. Some read the ages literally, some as honorific or symbolic. The Sumerian King List has even longer ages.

What Scripture says

Genesis 5 lists ten generations from Adam to Noah, with very long lifespans:

  • Adam lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5, ESV).
  • Methuselah lived 969 years, the longest (Genesis 5:27).
  • Noah lived 950 years (Genesis 9:29).

After the flood, lifespans shorten steadily: Shem 600, Abraham 175 (Genesis 25:7), Moses 120 (Deuteronomy 34:7). Psalm 90:10 gives the normal span as “seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty”. God says before the flood, “his days shall be 120 years” (Genesis 6:3), which some read as a limit on lifespan and others as a countdown to the flood.

What the evidence says

Science

Human lifespan today

The oldest verified person, Jeanne Calment of France, died in 1997 at 122. Human cells have biological limits: chromosomes have protective caps (telomeres) that shorten as cells divide, and damage builds up over time. No known biological mechanism allows a 900-year human life.

Possible explanations

Those who read the ages literally suggest:

  • Genetic decline: the first humans had fewer genetic mutations, and harmful mutations accumulated over generations, shortening lifespans.
  • Environmental change: some young-earth creationists propose the flood changed the environment.
  • A direct act of God (Genesis 6:3).

These remain speculation; there is no scientific evidence either way.

Context

The Sumerian King List

The Sumerian King List, from around 2000 BC, lists kings who reigned before a great flood, with vastly longer reigns:

Feature Sumerian King List Genesis 5
Generations before the flood 8 (or 10 in some versions) 10
Lifespans or reigns 18,600 to 43,200 years 365 to 969 years
After the flood Reigns drop sharply Lifespans drop steadily

So the pattern of very long lives before a flood, then shorter lives after, appears in other ancient traditions too. Genesis’s numbers are far more modest.

Numerical patterns

Some scholars note patterns in the numbers. Many of the ages in Genesis 5 are built from multiples of 5, sometimes plus 7, which may reflect a symbolic number system. Enoch lived 365 years (Genesis 5:23), the number of days in a solar year.

Ways to read the ages

View How it reads the ages
Literal People really lived that long
Symbolic or honorific The numbers express honour or significance, as in other ancient lists
Different number system The numbers were recorded in a system later misunderstood (some propose a base-60 connection)

Where they meet

Science can’t confirm or rule out lifespans in a world we can’t observe. Genesis shares a pattern with other ancient traditions, but its numbers are more restrained, and they decline steadily after the flood toward normal human lifespans.

What’s still open

Whether the ages are literal, symbolic or something else.

Bottom line

Unknown. Some read the ages literally, some as honorific or symbolic. The Sumerian King List has even longer ages. Because the evidence can’t settle it, this is rated Open.
